If you've got the patience to sit through it, some of the senate sessions being broadcast on C-SPAN are about as close as you can unspun media.
Tonight I'm listening to Sen. John McCain, Sen. Joe Lieberman, Sen. Jeff Sessions & Sen. Mark Dayton interview General George Casey, the new Iraqi Multi-National Force Commander. He's the military commander who is in charge after the hand-over of political power to the Iraqi government on June 30.
The senators leading this session are not playing politics, but are talking seriously with the new military commander about the plan to secure the peace, maintain security, establish democratic institutions, and implement an exit strategy.
There are no talking media heads that come on to tell you what it all means. I'm bringing this up because I believe this is where engaged citizenship begins in a democracy--through the open exchange of information between elected leaders and public servants. You don't have to read someone's biased newspaper account of this event in tomorrow's paper. You can sit in and hear for yourself what our top leaders are saying and doing with regard to war & peace.
