But with regards to AA, just to clarify, I found much of what was said to be triggering because the sayings were often similar to the family and the majority in the group seemed to believe that a person could not stay sober without AA. (Even though this was not the belief of the founders.) I also know that AA has it's traditions to prevent anyone from taking control. Though individuals in a group may allow it, all a person has to do is know about the traditions and bring them up. Like when a local group was trying to kick out some youth that were going to meetings because they didn't just use alcohol but they also used cocaine. That was ended swiftly by people claiming the 3rd tradition. So, in a sense, the traditions safeguard AA from becoming a cult even though some members do their best to form one.
