I remember being in the family after a long stretch of being "dealt with" and feeling real discouraged. I even contemplated leaving the family and going into the Khrisna or some other group. One guy I knew had a break down and left the fam. and ended up in the Salvation Army. I think this sort of thing is more apt to happen to someone who leaves because of burn out or being dumped. They are in such an emotionally vulnerable place that they seek a replacement for the one group with something similar as far as factors of having leadership and control over their lives, even if it is something they hate. It is ironic. But I can see how it happens. Hope your friend gets out.
After I left the family, I searched different churches but did not find what I was looking for. I then got involved with people addicted to substances. I was so isolated and had no outside support and knew of none available from strangers or outside orgs.
Sounds like your friend traded in one cult for another that was more accepting of her though also destructive.
I am glad I did not fit into the other orgs because of my "rebellious streak". It saved me from consumption by another sick system. Those things we were taught were negative in the fam and which other cults teach are negative are the things that can save our butts. btw, rare bbq steak. ummmm. sounds good. ;)
