If presidents were elected by pure majority, no presidential candidate would bother with the expense of even visiting less populated states. They would just concentrate on the North-eastern region (which is mostly Democratic) and would ignore the rest of the country, except for a few large cities. Net result would be the president would be elected by the most liberal voters. The Electoral College helps moderate this situation.
Miguel, I suggest you do your homework before spouting off your assumptions about the Electoral College.
