If it were stupid, I doubt that Margaret Singer would have spent so much time on it. Here's a link to what she had to say about the USMC:

It does nothing to address certain elements of basic training that appear to be designed to take over the free will of the individual.
Perhaps this is the only way to have a successful military. But, it still doesn't change what it is.
