there is a large proportion of substance abusers who were sexually and/or physically severely abused as children. Also many substance abusers have underlying conditions that can use treatment, like depression,anxiety (both components of PTSD)and other illnesses that their drugs of choice seem to help. Even the founder of AA saw a psychiatrist and got psychiatric help. And he got physicals and medical help. Most serious substances abusers need both as well as social support via family, friends, a recovery group or as many of those things and others as possible to get their illness into remission.
