Your desiderata hit all of the key points. You see, some of us who were in their clutches for too long knew that all of those things are intrinsic to The Family. Knowing how attached they are to doing none of the things you suggest in your list, the logical thing is to think "they should just let the captives go," dissolve.
So The Family screams "these want our poor little minority religion to go away!" when the reality is that many of those who to their chargrin know The Family intimately would be thrilled should they somehow stick around while making the changes on your list, we just know they wouldn't dream of it -- "compromising our convictions? we may just have to die defending the truth!" So we just shortcut to the part about going away.
