I think it is more along the lines of the 'pastor's child syndrome' of children who are brought up in such a restrictive environment with so many forbidden items, that when they throw away their upbringing, they throw away a lot of rules and go through a period of re-defining themselves as well as trying out the things that were previously forbidden.
