It is possible Berg had both bipolar disease and BPD. These two conditions have a high frequency of co-occurrence. I always thought Berg had a personality disorder, but it never occurred to me to try to diagnose it beyond the general concept of sociopathy.

To meet criteria for a BPD diagnosis, Berg would have to show a pattern of unstable and impulsive behavior described by at least five of the nine following conditions. It probably wouldn't be too hard to make a case for him meeting conditions 1, 3, 4, 8 and 9.

1) frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandoment
2) a pattern of unstable & intense interpersonal relationship characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation
3) identiy disturbance: markedly and persistenly unstable self-image or sense of self
4) impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., spending, sex, substance abuse, reckles driving, binge-eating).
5) recurrent cuicidal behavior, gestures, or therats, or self-mutilating behavior
6) affective instablity due to a makred reactivy of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days)
7) chronic feelings of emptiness
8) inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights)
9) transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms
