Psychopathy is an explanatory concept that is widely used by criminologists, but not by mental health workers. This is why psychopathy is not in the DSM-IV, which is used by psychiatric/mental health clinicans.
Hare's work on the subject of psychopathy is first rate, world class, foundational research, imo. He is extremely influential among criminologists, as he well deserves. It's important to understand that while Berg may also have been mentally ill, he was quite clearly a criminal. For that matter, so is Karen Zerby (quite clearly a criminal). She appears to have less obvious, overt signs of mental illness (brain disease) than Berg, but shows quite a lot of psychopathy in her letters to the faithful.
