It is a shame that there wasn't more of an organized community of ex-members at that time to offer encouragement and to back up her testimony.
The obvious answer to them begging her to "please not bring it to court because of the negative ramifications it would have on the group", is that the group should have considered that before they endorsed and encouraged such negative behavior.
This guy went the extra mile right into sadism. But, it is clear that The Family encouraged and endorsed his behavior, right up to defending him by encouraging your cousin to drop the case.
