I remember the last Home I was in before leaving (1999), one brother had a system job which paid 2/3 of the Home's bills. He and his wife had five children and she was a really sweet South American sister who quite honestly was wonderful at witnessing to people in such a slow, step by step kind of way which resulted in what I believe were real salvations and people who fell in love with the Lord. Many of them never knew they had been witnessed to by the "Family", they just knew we lived communally in order to conserve resources and have more time to home school the kids and witness. And there was another couple with just one child who did lots of the conventional Family "litnessing" and "tapenessing" stuff.
I was a single mom with a lot of kids, but we pooled the kids and I home schooled them full time, and they all really truly learned, etc. and I had a great deal of fun being able to get real school texts for them, set up a real classroom, have homework and tests and honest to goodness learning.
Then along comes "leadership" from the outside questioning whether the brother with the System job was "spiritual" enough, whether he witnessed enough on the job, etc. I don't think he really did "witness" much...he was a business executive with a lot going on and supporting the Home WAS his ministry, and he voluntarily threw his entire paycheck into the Home "pot" every week...
and his paycheck was what allowed the rest of us to concentrate on other things. He was never "ordered" to give up his job, but the pressure to conform and not "give up his crown for Mammon" etc. was strpmg and really messed up what had been one of the better Homes I'd ever been in.
