Any organization worth its salt will trim itself to keep only the productive branches. These people are just like any other group in that sense. The idealism of a small band is long death and the name of the game is survival now keeping the totally obedient very close while preventing the seeds of antagonism in the rest. I'd say they are strengthening their base of support just like they have been trying to do all along. They want to have a lot of middle-of-the-road people who will defend them when the day come.
