I'm currently reading The Politics and Experience of Ritual Abuse: Beyond Belief, by Sara Scott (2001, Open University Press: Buckingham). It offers a fairly comprehensive analysis of the subject, including figuring out how to define ritual abuse and who & what meets the criteria; case studies involving people who were abused in a cult or ritualized context as children; descriptions of perpetrators and their methods & motives; and two chapters on treatment issues faced by survivors.
I think Rocky is probably right about the what happened in TF being a case of ritual abuse.
