I'm a great fan of the Mars. I think if there's any planet people ought to head some day it's there. I read & loved all 3 books in the Mars series (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) & thot they were great, but when getting people there only happens by cutting health-care benefits & education, I think it's a tremendous waste of money to send a manned mission there when robotic probes accomplish lots for a fraction of the cost.
It reminds me of Berg's big pushes & experiments that were extravagent wastes of human time, money and people's lives. Think of the emotional and mental destruction that happened from breaking up all the marriages to make everyone more useful pawns. Kind of Mao's Great Leap Forward to put iron foundaries in every peasant's back yard.
Mo & Mao proved you can waste thousands & millions of lives in colossal, worthless projects.
