I don't know if this is the case on the whorehouse rumor, but, you'd be surprised at how Barney makes friends and enemies based on who he lets live with him and who he doesn't.
I think this very board has seen at least one individual who talked of Barney as a hero, then a villian, then a hero again based on what his address was at the time.
