people who grew up in that cult are subjected to a lot of reading from very early on in their lives..they are made to read aloud everyday in front of people.in fact they are overwhelmed with stuff to read and memorize.they are trained to write pr and fundraising letters..its only natural they inherit good reading and writing skills when coming out from that cult. from there with a lot of hard work and resourcefulness they can make use of their reading skills to get themselves ahead accademically.
but how about you trying asking those who are still in or just coming out something mathematical or logical,or try discussing economics? or talk about their favourite architecture. or discuss something social-political. try talking about some detailed history of some period in some part of the world. or try poetry and literature or discuss the quotes of famous authors. or try asking them why their opinions are formed the way they are and to cite the sources of their info, or ask them to cite the sources of these sources. how about an in depth chat about organic chemistry or marine biology, or even a subject they like to debate like evolution. ask them for details like what research was done, the flaws in the test methods. how about art and the influence of the 5 biggest artists in the 20th century. try anything in depth. heck, try discussing thier favourite baseball stars, and ask them about famous basketball matches. anything! chances are 9 out of 10 you won't get much of a deep discussion going with someone who is still in the cult or who has just left it. people in that cult only get to learn what they need to impress others, not because they are encouraged to follow some interest or hobby or dream about a future career. everything and anything to do with education and information is surface and its filtered.
i am not mentioning all this to offend and hurt people who grew up in the cult because my own children also suffer from this lack of education, but to point out that a destructive cult is a destructive cult, and this particular one doesn't like to have genuinely smart educated people in it.
that any sga is able to get into college is not thanks to but despite the barriers the cult placed in their paths. on exiting they are like 1st generation immigrants who work harder and put more effort into success because they must.my 2 euro cents.
