I think each County in the US has it's own procedure. We live in Los Angeles County. Even though he had already lived with me from the age of two (and he was probably 9-10 at this point), and I was married to his natural Mother, they still did a pretty complete investigation. This included my job, finances, and an interview with him alone to make sure he wasn't being abused.
