I agree that many FGs who were abusive did not (at the time)comprehend that what they were doing was in fact abuse - it was all sanctioned by "the word" from Berg. TF was a lab and we were ALL the guinea pigs. ("Oops sorry that didn't work. We'll try something else...") I think we were all abused but in different ways.
The main difference between the SG and the FG, at least as I see it, is that we (SG) were children. We could not get fed up and leave. We also had never known anything else and our only point of comparison was what we were told about the evil "system".
I often wonder why my parents never left - especially in the "dark ages" of the 80s when I'm sure they couldn't help but notice that something was wrong. But then I wonder where they would have gone, what they would have done. Returning to the countries they left as teenagers but now with several children and no savings or work history to speak of must have been a frightening thought. Maybe that is why they chose to "ride it out".
Berg and his entourage were ultimately responsible for the havoc TF wrought in it's members lives. That doesn't excuse those who were abusive but it does help to explain why people acted as they did.
I totally admire those of both generations who had the guts to see things as they truly were and walk away.
