I guess what I'm thinking about is a case in my town a few years ago. There was a well respected man who was not only a police officer, but a minister to a small congregation. He had a lovely wife and darling children and was very well liked. However, he was not always so honorable it turns out. He was having an affair with a married woman. One thing led to another and one day after she called off the affair, he went to her husband's house and a fight ensued and he murdered him. He tried to say that it was self defense, but the jury didn't buy it and he now sits in jail. Seeing his wife come to court day after day and his children stand up for him just broke my heart. I bet there were people in his department who knew about his affair and never said anything. That's one scenario. And no, one is not legally required to report abuse. Maybe morally, but not legally unless you are a teacher, police officer, medical professional.
