I remember the practice of opening private mail of Family members happening way back in the beginning in the early 70's and still happening as late as the 90's. Often it was to "spare" individual members the trauma of contact with system family and relatives. Only one little problem: it's a Federal Offence, and probably was a crime in most other countries of the world where it was practiced too.
I've heard stories from people who literally had their mail read by a Shepherd, then ripped to pieces and thrown in the garbage without ever being given to the disciple. One girl I know found her torn-up letter in the trash, picked it out and painstakingly taped it back together so she could read it.
I understand the reason for prison wardens opening mail to inmates before delivering it, but if the only legitimate comparison is to prisoners in prison, it doesn't say a whole lot for life in the Family. (Which is Heaven on Earth by the way, last I heard.)
