My correspondance with someone on the exfamily.org staff revealed that the only reason they hadn't allready posted "The Girl Who Wouldn't" was simply because they were waiting for somebody to write a commentary. They are now discussing what their policy should be. Hey coordinator...how about sheding some light on this issue? Inquiring minds want to know!
As far as the technical issues you mentioned:
I agree with you that Optical Character Recognition (OCR) isn't 100% perfect, but even low-cost OCR engines have about a 95% accuracy rate, which means there will be only minor editing to do.
I use the Kurzweil 1000 OCR software, and it has no problem dealing with multiple collumns. I will admit that Kurzweil 1000 is at the high-end ($995) but I've even used OCR programs costing under $300 that did an adequate job. I just like the Kurzweil 1000, because it has a lot of bells and whistles that make it easier for a blind user. For sighted users, there are more affordable choices.
