I think that what draws the most attention to the masturbation thing is fantasy of sex with Jesus during masturbation aspect of it.
I'm not sure that people close to the Family (in or recently exited) understand how strange this really is to people who have never been in, or have been out for a long time.
I was having lunch with a close friend who is a Catholic Priest a year or two ago. Another friend who was with us was never in The Family either, but has been around the whole thing for as long as I have.
All of a sudden my buddy says to the Priest, "Joe knows about this group that believes in masturbating to Jesus!".
I almost did a spit take, and decided to choke for a moment instead, and just hoped that he didn't hear.
Then the Priest says to me, "What is this about masturbation?".
So, I spend a few minutes laying out LJR as I understand it for this Priest, in a public restaurant.
When I finished, he took a moment to think about it, and then said, "So, they are saying it is okay to masturbate?".
I guess the whole theory of making believe you were having sex with Jesus was so odd that he didn't even process it in his brain. All he heard was that people in this cult were being encouraged to masturbate. That was just wierd enough for him to absorb. The other stuff went right over his head.
