When the Loving Jesus letters first came out, it was during a 3-day "Family Feast" and there was a complicated set of directions on each Home reading through the series together, including times, circumstances, etc. As I recall, a teamworker (shepherd) was supposed to pre-read a special version of the series which was "edited" for, if I remember correctly, 14 year olds and up (the official "teen" age at the time). It had most of the more sexually explicit references cut out and focussed primarily on the idea of Jesus as one's Lover and Bridegroom, and the idea was that the teens read it with an adult who was comfortable with it and good at answering questions and encouraging discussion. Each Home was sent exactly the right number of copies of the series for their adult & teen members, adult copies were supposed to be kept locked up when not in use, etc. etc.
The "JETTs" (11-13 year olds, once again if I remember correctly) did not get the series but were given other unrelated pubs to read and which encouraged them in their assigned task of childcare during the "Feast" so the adults/teens could concentrate on the new pubs.
Am not making any value judgments here- just recounting my memory of the time, for anyone interested!
