Thank you thank you for your thoughtful, insightful, and intelligent comments. They are so very helpful. Your 'what if' concerning LJ is excellent, right on the money.
A caution about FCF. My understanding is that while FCF is controlled -- ie all board members are trusted longtime members of the Family -- by the Family, and while most -- probably 80-90% of their projects are run by Family members, there are some projects that are not operated by Family members.
FCF leaders know that their Achilles heel is that they have this Family connection. They know that it cannot stand any scrutiny. So I am sure they have done whatever they can to muddy the waters in this regard, including allowing a few non-Family members to operate under the FCF umbrella. Sort of like how big businesses in the 60's had a token black on staff so they could say that they were racially intregrated.
But the facts remain that:
* FCF was formed by the Family, with Family funds, to serve Family interests
* Grant Montgomery, aka Gary, is president of FCF. He was president at the same time that he was Prime Minister of the Family -- third highest position in the group. As PM, he signed off on all the Family leadership decisions of the late 80's and most of the 90's. This includes victor camps, LJ, and lots of other stuff.
* FCF is still operated and controlled by Family members today, none of whom have publicly denounced the excesses of the Family: notably religious prostitution and the systematic, sanctioned sexual abuse of thousands of children who grew up in the group.
FCF is very very afraid that these issues will come to light. They know that the Family-FCF connection, were it exposed and documented, could be the death knell of the foundation. Who wants to give to a charity whose directors at any time were involved in any way, direct or indirect, in religious prostitution and the sexual abuse of minors, and who remain a member of a religious group with such a track record?
It is as simple as that.
