ray and sam:
i just want to add this in as i find that when time goes by people tend to forget, remove, change what was fact into something else etc.
for the record, even in the early nineties while the British case was going on publications came out about purging the Books (ALL of them) from paragraphs, lines etc, or entire letters. The notices were prefaced by disclaimers that said basically 'we are not doing this because we don't believe this, we are doing it because of persecution or because of people who stumble or are weaker'
same old crap, right? do you remember now, recognize it...or were you doing the dishes then and did not happen to read it? :-)
now if you want to say that this or that was not for everybody to read...and quote Summit Jewels fine...that was 1993...the purges went on PAST 1993 and the motive given to ALL members was the motive above. Didn't your kids who are in F read that? maybe they did not pay attention or maybe they are instructed to lie...we all were.
So we can say whatever we want about what is theory and what is practice but the loopholes and the cracks for the people who are more interested in certain 'aspects' and licenses of the 'law of love' than doing dishes or schedules (am referring to ray...) have always been THERE. Those cracks and loopholes have been there on purpose to allow those who needed the loopholes to find them...as Berg himself wanted so much to help out people like himself not to be repressed but to find expression for....particular desires.
Let us remember THAT. you both have a point, but that point needs to be considered in the context of the history of what happened and what was published as policy. Maybe a lot of folks here are getting way too old and just plain don't remember, but i was one of the people who was reading mo letters even while doing chores and i DO remember all this stuff.
