What you must remember is that the academics who write about the Family are not emotionally affected by the Family's actions like exers are.
They have very different motives and they are nothing to do with justice or morality. That is not their job or their motives. However, it is quite possible that some have been serviced by Family girls(Why wouldn't they if they had the chance) and no doubt some have been used by the Family for their own ends. To write about a NRM you need evidence and because they are 'new' you cannot really rely on other scholars. This is why NRM's are a great field for mediocre scholars (and those who want to make their mark in a very competitive field) because all they need is primary sources (ie The Family).
It is unimportant that the information is concocted as the academics job is to present the evidence not make moral judgements on it. Being a Religious Studies scholar myself I must defend some serious minded academics but hey you know in every field there are dickheads, why would that of academia be any different.
