What you've described sounds a bit like a visit to a gypsy pan-handling trailer park on the edge of town. A lifestyle of scams to raise money, lies to protect security, a state of denial to protect sanity. The only difference I think is that gypsies probably would care for their old and their sick, whereas the Family is manifestly anti-social toward its own weak members.
It was always that way, even when we were in, but now that we're some distance from it mentally and physically, it really stands out. I can't but feel how far they have fallen when, like you said, there was not even any pretense of interest in you as a person. But I guess that's understandable: the teens and people at the Home never bought into the system, they were just born there and there were bored out of their skulls.
