I read that when I was 13 and the second book too, then we re-joined that group and I haven't caught up yet. Another book that left an impression on my young mind was Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews and the following books in that series (a morbid twisted tale of murder, incest and other strangeness), and The Kadin by Bertrice Small, my first introduction to adult romance novels, and still one of my favorites which I re-read every other year or so.
