You definitely had the impression that the Republican Guard would put up a huge fight in Baghdad, but that's not the case at all, & once the Iraqis themselves realize the the Guard is gone & the secret police gone they're cheering & dancing. The Kurds are dancing in the streets, the Shiites in the south are cheering & now even the Sunnis in Baghdad are welcoming the Americans as 'liberators.'
The funny situation is that almost all the rest of the Arab world (the non-Iraqi Arabs) is condemning the invasion & hate the Americans for their unilaterial action, yet the Iraquis themselves are hailing Bush as a 'hero'. Strange situation.
