I don't agree that these other countries get less demonized although it may seem so. Look at the way so many countries are ignored or demonized in the USA? That is why the american people are largely ignorant of what is happening elsewhere. The US is so huge and so many things happen there, it is understandable.
The press in general normally ignores ALL countries, even main cosmopolitan newspapers ignore important events in the rest of the world, unless something directly affecting US interests is at stakes. That is normal because there is just so much paper or time.
And then, when conflicts or problem with other countries take place, just like in any other part of the world, the enemy is demonized. It has happened here everytime, then we are friends like with Vietnam. The USA is still demonizing Cuba, Nicaragua; Grenada and Panama dosn't even exist for newspapers now. All of the sudden we are friends of Spain but don't even know that they speak Spanish (not "mexican").
Anyway, I don't think the US is demonized more than other countries. I think it is the us vs. them mentality that is prevalent in the newscasts.
