Wow that explains so much about our own experience. Interesting how even in just a very brief period of time, the captives ended up defending their captors and I bet were even reluctant to part from them once released. You mention it's possible to affect even household pets which means that the terror must be so severe it hits the very core of life hence the survival mode. Terrifying that it does happen.
