Interesting post, Goth! Yes, this is a complex subject, and I have to agree with the point above where someone said that accountability happened at different ages for different people, and maybe one person could have been accountabile in one area of their life for one thing, but totally oblivious in other areas.
This also brings up the very profound subject of conscience, real gut-level stuff and false standards taught. For example, given the climate in the Family, some people could had illegal sex and not feel a twinge of conscience, yet their conscience would not let them rest if they had a carbonated Coca-cola when out distributing lit. The camels and gnats kind of thinking.
But I've said before that there is a real gut-level at which survival mode kicks in and makes us do things to get out from under the oppression of sick ideology (like in your case, grabbing your kids and running when the warning bells started going off), but it's a slower wakeup process in many other people's cases.
