Yes, your comments were inappropriate. If you have a rose bush in your your yard, strip off your shirt, uproot the rose bush and flagellite yourself for half an hour. If you can't quite reach those hard-to-get places, ask a neighbor to help, preferably one who doesn't like you.
Or if you prefer reciting Hail Mary over rosary beads, that might be acceptable as well.
