The type of xenophobia in the US is particular against not-white people. Nordern europeans are more difficult to spot than those who don't look like the majority white american but the US has done a good job on their own citizens seeling themselves as the good guys in world affairs. Historians and some intellectuals are aware of the realities of their own actions but I doubt this is true for the vast majority. Add that to the lack of interest in self evaluation and you have a curious combination of xenophobia and racism that justifies their actions even as they go against their own values.
