It's very sad but what you're suggesting about the "perpetuity" of the tares vis-a-vis the good crop would appear to be closer to reality than the eradication of the sick field. It is unfortunate that the good gets mired in with the bad. But, like you say, as long as they're still in, they remain part of the problem even though they may appear to be part of the solution. As in any abusive situation, the abuse doesn't stop until the abused gets out. Otherwise the abused continues to enable the abuser.
