Maybe that's the problem, you left long before the children were even growing up and experiencing the worse things. I think MG said it pretty good in his post. He does feel a sense of guilt greater than you as he stayed so much longer. I was thinking of writing a piece on the difference between guilts. Good guilt and bad guilt - I think there is such a thing. Because on the one hand, Berg filled us with guilt, we were made to feel guilty about everything, every little thing we did or didn't do. Yet at the same time,we do need to feel some guilt over what transpired over our children. I don't think that's bad.
