for info on FAFSA, eligibility, guidelines, etc. Also, each university has specialized departments and people who can answer your concerns. The problem with them is that they are normally overworked and have little or no time to spend with non students.
Also, each university has a list of many other sources of money and normally apply the information from the FAFSA to (u)all of them. Keep in mind though, that some of these other scholarships may require a separate application.
The most difficult thing to do is the paperwork because it has to be done almost one year in advance. It is also important to do it early because the Pell Grant (money you don't have to re-pay) is assigned early and it is first-come first-served until all the money is gone. So even if you get a very high priority, if the money is gone there is nothing you can do. It is not anusual for people to find out that others with less need (need is the legal term they use)have received more money as the that university assigns them.
Apply early, even if you don't plan to attend too soon. Find out of the optiman time frame.
