Berg had a huge denial syndrome. He was talking about the drunks on skid row in one letter and he said you could solve their problems with alcoholism if you'd only put a drinking fountain on each block. He said the skid row guys weren't necessarily thristy for alcohol, they were just thirsty.
No wonder he had no idea on how to deal with his own alcoholism.
