One of the things that I learned when I was an active member of the COG - and very contrary to their doctrine - was the importance of taking care of myself. I wanted to help others - and the thinking at that time was to "burn your candle at both ends," basically neglecting your body and health - and who cared anyways because the end was near, right? I was 6'2" and 155 lbs. I looked into the mirror one day and basically saw a skeleton-like guy looking back at me. That did it for me. I started making a daily trip to Burger King to supplement my garbage diet. I really believe that no matter how long or short of a time a person was involved with the cult, the trauma will be with you for a lifetime in one way or another.
You mentioned feeling guilty about doing something for yourself -- that is sure some Family crap isn't it? And end-time paranoia or believing that God is going to somehow violently judge you because you left the cult or stopped tithing is something that really hangs on with a lot of folks. It is all just such total bullshit. It simply has to be rejected.
It is so good that we have this forum to share our experiences and lessons learned. It is great therapy that we all need.
