You're right that she'd be better off apologizing. It would help her and others. Only thing is the process would be very difficult and given her present state, drive her to the edge, which is why I pointed out her probable motives for not doing it. But before she can even apologize she needs to sort through a lot of stuff.
I think she's drinking to ease the pain of dealing with it all.
