Confirmed non-suite for the Children of God

La Provence, march 7 2000, by Denis Trossero

[Full text]

The indictment chamber of the court of appeals in Aix confirmed the non-suite in favor of the cult "Children of God".
This marks the end of a very long and controversed justice episode. The indictment chamber of the court of appeals of Aix-en-Provence
just confirmed the non-suite in favor of 21 members of the Children of God. The magistrates have estimated that the hearing did not allow them to bring charges in relation with aggravated procuring on minors, sequestration of people, voluntary violence and corruption on minors. Although, the various investigations revealed the lack of education closely related to their way of life. This will be taken over by the judge for children and is not under the correctional court. Founded in the USA by David BERg, and brought in Paris in 1972 with the goal of helping social and spiritual welfare by the spreading of the Gospel, also to help the homeless youth and drug addicts..." The Children of God was dissolved in France in 1978 to become "The Family". The cult was known to recruit with "flirty fishing", i.e. by sexual encounters with adults as well with the minors.
In June 1993, the detective-constables search the Children of God's home in Eguilles near Aix where there were 43 adults and 148 children from a few months old to sixteen years of age.
Books and texts talking about the fact that sexual awareness should be taught as soon as possible to children were confiscated. But, no sexual violence was discovered.
Only one person who did not belong to the Equilles' community was sent to the court for corrupting children.

M" Anne Carrel et Dominique Inshauspé, the two defence lawyers for the "Children of God" had already obtained a non-suite from the judge on January 11 1999, but the civil parties went for an appeal.
