Even as I was writing it, I knew it is too much of a one-sided argument. There are degrees of accountability because there were degrees of responsibility. For example, I feel responsible for those whom I directly encouraged to join but I realize I have some responsibility for those who joined as a result of my being in The Family.
I don't think The Family will ever disband for the same reason I think at some point those who joined due to my direct or indirect participation had to make their own decision -- separate from my participation -- to remain in the cult or to leave.
Just like I don't take responsibility for the existence of The Family but for my role, whatever big or small, in their existence, at some point, when I realized that their teachings were damaging to myself and to society, then I became a participant in their deeds of darkness.
Before I was a victim but after the point of realization, when I took conscience of their deeds, staying in the cult would have mean to be an accomplice, I would have also become a perpetrator.
