When I joined in LA in 1970 I was naive, pretty ignorant and willing to do anything to serve Jesus and win souls. I had received Jesus about 6 months earlier and the churches and Jesus People at the time didn't offer me anything.
When I joined it was pretty hard times. Pretty much like you would expect of some kind of a boot camp. There were a lot of good things going on. Basic Bible classes and no Mo letters. It was also total mind control from the get-go. The only thing a newbie could do was listen and agree. You couldn't take a shit without someone being with you. If you looked at your face in a mirror too long they were down your throat for it. If some jack-off leader (and they were everywhere) said something that you knew was incorrect you better not say anything. The food was bad. They deprived you of sleep. You either had to do everything that was asked of you or you were kicked out and condemned as a backslider who God was going to judge with some kind of disaster. It was a real fear trip. If you liked something they took it away. Your mail was read and your telephone calls were monitored. Looking back on it it was 90% shit and 10% great times. The great times were witnessing and winning souls. Thank God most of them did not join. I can't believe I was stupid enough to stay with the COG as long as I did.
