but I don't know about hating The Family as a whole. I have had a lot of important and good experiences there. If it weren't for their participation in my own salvation I would probably be under ground now or worse yet.
On the other hand, it was not actually The Family as a group of people who believed in the weird things they believe now but a bunch of honest idealist young people, as you say. I learned Christianity from Christians who were living the Bible. I learned from them and appreciate their effort.
But the Family then was not The Family now and that may be confusing to some. It may also cause confusion of the emotions. I dislike their beliefs but I don't hate them as individuals. I hate their teachings but don't give them room to control me anymore. They used to do that and now I refuse to allow them that much power.
