openmindedness

Since getting out of the cult, I have realized that many people seem to veer towards fundamentalism. Whatever floats your boat, but I think it is a healthy thing to have different points of view, different political parties that people support, or don't; different religions, or none if that is what feels safest to a person. I remember reading an article by someone who had left the cult and then went back to bring the "true" revolution for Jesus. Then he simultaneously courted and got a "sister" out that he married or something? I can't help but think that this "sister" could have been influenced by the authority the person seemed to command. I think when someone gets out of a totally controlled situation it is helpful to have some good neutral space where a person can learn that there are many choices, and pick what suits them. Maybe to me, I like actions more. My life partner is a Christian, and she accepts me for who I am, what I don't believe, and I accept her for who she is and what she believes. I think one thing survivors of cults have is a lot of shame to unload. Most of it is imposed. That is, when you are taught how to view politics, sexuality, lifestyles, religions, books, movies, press, etc. and that your opinion or ideas are nothing, everything "good" is of God, and everything "bad" is of man,(you) etc. And that your kids illnesses or injuries are your fault or something wrong with you, then it is easy to leave and feel like this great big nothing, or the ebola virus on legs. I think many people run towards another rigid thought group.
It is hard work to develop your own personality, i.e. What you believe, what you like to do, what the bible says or doesn't say, or whether it matters to you or not. Personally, I feel like I have done my time in hell. Too much of it. I want to find people who accept me for who I am, what I believe whether they agree with it or believe in it themselves, or not. I have found some people that do.
I wonder what other people think about this? Can you relate to this?
