There is a difference between knowing ABOUT a cult, and having been IN a cult.
Head knowledge is fine. But experience speaks a thousand words.
IMO Joseph KNOWS about the COG, and has even married someone who was in the COG.
But IMO he cannot know the PSYCHOLOGY of the COG.
No one (not even Joseph) can understand the bitterness and disappointment of an ex-cult member, unless they have been there themselves.
Empathy and Sympathy are clearly two different things.
