Lots of people coming out of the Family haven't had a lot of experience in how to shop. I didn't. Thank goodness my wife did, and she's good at it. She still boldly provisions.
One thing which is definitely worth it is a freezer (or a small freezer if you live in an apartment) then ONLY buy meat when it's on sale, and stock up.
And the dangers of credit cards. Whew! If people coming out of the Family don't have much of a credit rating and can't get ahold of a credit card, be thankful. They come in handy in a pinch, but 50% of Americans who own a credit card don't pay off the balance at month's end and are paying 15-18% interest. It's the quickest way to go in debt.
And unless you can write off your meals out (like Joseph and others) don't get in the habit of eating out. Well, this may sound like common knowledge but you'd be surprised, even in the world at large, how many people go in debt eating out cause they can't or won't cook at home. My sister went in debt over that very thing.
Coming out can be a hard enough experience psychologically, but we can at least help new refugees avoid common pitfalls.
