You know...
The odd thing is that if you stand at the door of a supermarket with a collection basket, a certain number of people will give you money no matter what you say.
I was going into a local Vons market last weekend and a guy stopped me and said he was a Christian missionary raising money, and they were supporting a school for kids.
When I hear that, I've just got to stop!
I asked him what group he was in. He hemmed and hawed, and then mumbled some generic membership name. I asked if he had any literature, and he had some, but it didn't look familiar.
Then I told him that I did not want to donate, but I was curious who he was with. I never got a real answer. Probably not the Family, but probably something similar.
When I left, he asked me if I would watch his stand (where the money was kept) so he could run across the street and use the restroom. Then he realized I was the guy that asked a bunch of questions, and said, "Oh sorry... never mind", and ran across the street leaving the stand unattended.
I did watch from the parking lot for a few mintues. After he came back about 1 in five people gave him something, I presume, just to shut him up.
I never give money to people on the streets anymore, especially people who are in front of stores. Even kids, since I have kids of my own who are always shaking me down for cookies and fund raisers.
