New puppy

Posted by goth88 on July 15, 2002 at 21:08:45:

We got a new puppy. She was about to be put down. (Got her Saturday) She is skinny, wormy, and looks liked something out of Dr. Suess (a victim of the Lorax!) Anyhow, we've only had her two days. She had grown up in a cage(from 4 wks old to 5 mos. old.) with other puppies and dogs, crowded, no toys, no personal affection. She is already gaining weight and is getting really bouncy. Our German Shepherd adult dog is mothering her, and sharing her toys. At first she would grab a toy and run back and forth just setting it down in one corner of the room and then taking it back to the other side. She didn't know how to play. I got her started playing some tug of war with Maxie (the shep.) Ginger (the puppy) loves that. Maxie lets her win and she just feels so big and bad! It is so cute to watch. Now she is laying on a pile of toys and she is just so happy. She was scared to come inside until today. Now she leaps for the doorway to come in. When I was a teen I had a dog who was also in a similar situation and state, only she had been beaten alot, too. I had to give her lots of space at first. She would squat and pee, cowaring if you just looked at her. Then one day she approached me. It was a process but I watched that animal get a spirit she never knew she had. She came to life, slowly warming up to it like a toaster. I think people are similar. Dogs can't remember as much, they grow quicker, and they heal quicker. To anyone this story touches, you are worth loving and healing and caring about, especially if you never had it. I want to believe that I am worth it. Thanks for your support.
